I can't decide if this, one of my favorite things from this summer, is something new and wonderful or if everyone else has been doing it for years and I just had no idea. So lean in close and here we go...I planted flowers in my veggie garden! Yes! I'm not even making that up.
See, now I can't tell if I just rocked your world or if you all issued a collective yawn and wandered off to rewatch the series finale of The Closer.
I was really happy with doing this, though, so I'm gonna share a little more with you.
The flowers grew amazingly well, nestled in there with the vegetables. And they brightened up the beds, which are hidden off to the side of the house. There's just something uplifting about taking a practical thing like a veggie bed and making it pretty. And there were enough flowers that I could cut plenty to bring inside for vases. I always hesitate to cut flowers growing out front because I can't decide whether I like them better in the ground or inside in a vase. This way, I didn't worry about ruining the front landscaping.
If you're going to plant flowers in with the veggies, just make sure they have similar growing requirements. Zinnias, marigolds, and daisies work well with sun-loving summer vegetables. And next spring, I'm planting some violets and pansies in with my lettuce and early spring veggies. That's going to be one wild ride right there, my friends.
